CHARLOTTE LOWRY

CHARLOTTE grew up in Fulton, Missouri. She had four older brothers and her mother was a schoolteacher. Her dad sold insurance. She was slightly above average in everything-intelligence, appearance, athleticism, popularity, etc. and had a reasonably happy childhood. She went to William Woods college (a girls' school in Fulton) and earned a degree in early childhood education. Her boyfriend JEFF went to school at Westminster (another college in Fulton, MO) where he studied international law and Spanish. When they graduated, JEFF proposed to CHARLOTTE and also got a job for an import/export company in San Francisco. Although CHARLOTTE was nervous about moving so far away from her family, she was in love with JEFF and felt that it was a good opportunity for him.

CHARLOTTE began working at a nice grade school in San Francisco and enjoyed her job. She began to make friends with the other teachers and to settle into their neighborhood. She enjoyed exploring the city, visiting bookstores and art galleries and watching the tourists on Fisherman's Wharf. JEFF hated his job, mostly because he felt out of his element in the big city and he began to resent CHARLOTTE for fitting in so well, while he did not. A few months after their arrival in the city, a friend of CHARLOTTE's from Fulton came to stay with them for a week vacation. When she left, JEFF left with her and he and CHARLOTTE soon divorced. She was hurt and embarrassed and felt that she couldn't go back to Fulton, where JEFF and her friend were now living. She also enjoyed her job and decided to try to make a life for herself in California. She found a roommate, another teacher at her school and began to settle in.

In the last year, she has begun to date a man, GREG. He is a math teacher and a coach at a nearby junior high and they met during some sort of teacher's workshop. They are taking the relationship slow and things are going very well. He is also from a small town and has many of the same mild but pleasant characteristics that CHARLOTTE has. Now that she is happily in a relationship, she has an impulse to try to help all of her friends become equally happy.

CHARLOTTE was JACK's second grade teacher when his parents died. He went through a rough couple of months after they died and ANNIE came to live with them and ANNIE had to have several conferences with CHARLOTTE to discuss his problems. JACK went through some counseling and ANNIE and the new puppies helped him to overcome the worst of his grief. At one point, JACK asks for permission to bring the puppies for show and tell and ANNIE brings them to school at the end of the day. After school, ANNIE asks CHARLOTTE to come for a cup of tea so that she can thank her for her help with JACK and they quickly become close friends.

CHARLOTTE is very mild-mannered and sweet but she has a dry sense of humor and she loves to watch people in public places. She is fascinated and amused by the absurdity of many of the people that she sees and she can be a very good mimic, when she is loosened up a bit. She is a loyal and caring friend and a calming presence.
