Triumph of Love

The MM - "A lone American and a cast of Brits bring you this (approximately) 300 year old French farce which is produced by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci and directed by his wife Clare Peploe who also helped her husband write the script. This introduction is not nearly as confusing as the film's plot. Mira Sorvino, heiress to the throne, wants to win the true love of her sworn enemy the prince. In order to do so she must dress as a man and seduce several characters simultaneously including her original target. Her master plan includes Shakespearean like dialogue and judicious disclosure of her true identity. With the eventual results of her efforts being revealed in the title, the cliché "it's not the destination it's the journey" is appropriate. Ben Kingsley's work deserves praise but Sorvino's perfect complexion and slight features wouldn't fool anybody and the character's overall behavior borders on the absurd. "Farce" is the key word when discussing any aspect of this movie."
