The Ring

The MM - "Naomi Watts (caution: link may contain nudity) dresses down for the film as she plays a maverick reporter for the Seattle Post Intelligencer who decides to investigate the brutal demise of her niece whose death occurs one week after viewing a mysterious video. To try and gain some insight into the situation (like any good reporter) Watts watches the jinxed tape herself. Then her ex-boyfriend Martin Henderson watches it. Then her son (David Dorfman) can't sleep so he deals with his insomnia by viewing the damn thing as well. The stakes are now sufficiently high so Watts and Henderson embark on a bizarre, desperate, and shocking journey to solve the curse of the mysterious tape. Surrealistic, captivating, and at times genuinely scary, the Ring would seem to have the makings of a brass monkey winner. Unfortunately, the story is so unbelievable that is loses most of its impact as soon as the theater lights come up.
