The
Importance of Being Ernest

The MM - "Oscar
Wilde's hilarious turn of the century play is brought to the
silver screen by the same director (Oliver
Parker) using the same lead actor (Rupert
Everett) that brought you "An
Ideal Husband" which was another film based on a Wilde
play. This time Rupert has a brother (Colin
Firth) who's not his brother. Both gentlemen are named Ernest
even though neither of them are named Ernest. Wilde takes these and
other equally confusing situations and with the brilliant writing
that made him required reading for all English lit majors, creates
one of the cleverest plays of the 20th century. In an era when
Hollywood considers farting to be an example of first rate comedy, a
movie with a clever and witty script anchored by solid acting performances
is a welcome change and a bloody good show."
Ed's Note - All these
superlatives talking about clever plays! However, the Movie Man hasn't seen
even one play this century or last and might not be the best
qualified to speak on the subject. The three or four versions we've
seen on the stage have been funny indeed and one of us will check
out the film and let you know how it measures up.
