Memento

The MM - "Phenomonal film-noir. Guy Pierce and his supporting cast do an outstanding job in this psychological thriller presented in reverse chronological order. This innovation creates a mind boggling yet empathetic twist. Excellent editing and an outstanding script are the final ingredients that deserve recognition in making this movie a masterpiece."

MM Note - "Memento is my #1 movie of 2001 even though it has a copyright in 2000. It was released later than planned because after it was made the producers could not get any major studio to distribute the film. They had to do it independently which is what causes the confusion. The Academy Awards considers it a 2001 movie. It won the Independent Spirit Film Award which is no small achievement but I would call it the best film, indie or studio, of the year."

Ed's Note - The rest of the Goliard Staff agrees that Memento is a fine movie even though it is the only film that, due to its skewed chronology and quirky style, has ever made one of us experience actual physical vertigo symptoms simply from watching a movie screen. Everyone probably knows by now the tactics employed in the film so we won't go into it here other than to say it can be summed up with this quote from the lead character. "Uh oh what am I doing? Oh I must be chasing that guy. Whoops! I guess he's chasing me." The film is mostly great because of the fresh cinematic style but also well done otherwise and Guy Pierce is excellent in the lead.
