Maryam

The MM -
"It's tough enough being a teenager. It was no different in New
Jersey in 1979. Mary was born in Iran but moved to America when she
was three. She's almost totally Americanized but her world gets a
heavy dose of international politics when her fundamentalist cousin
comes to live with her in Jersey and the Ayatollah raids the embassy
and takes American hostages. Problems for Mary are no longer
confined to lip gloss and does the cute boy like me. They now
include bricks through the front window, lectures from her cousin
about her decadent American lifestyle, insults about her ethnicity
from the blue eyed blonde who also likes the cute boy, skeletons in
the family closet, and "go home camel jockey" painted on
the side of her car. This film is not only an interesting look at
1979 but has current social relevance even though the movie was
released before Sept 11, 2001.
MM Note - Director Ramin Serry stated that his film "has become
a totally different movie after the terrorist attacks on the World
Trade Center."
