Lovely and Amazing

The MM - "Catherine Keener, Emily Mortimer, and Brenda Blethyn star in this film about two sisters and their mom dealing with the personal and professional trials and tribulations of being women and a family in 21st century Los Angeles. This slice of life tale gets excellent performances from its leading ladies who find themselves dealing with problems that arise from situations that occur after they attain goals they thought they always wanted. Straight forward and honest to a fault, but managing to retain its sense of humor, Lovely and Amazing shows that no matter how independent we try to be there are benefits from the apple falling close to the tree.

Ed's Note -
We agree with the four star rating but would add that the film is actually about three sisters and their mom with the third sister being the  eight year old Annie, played in show stealing style by Raven Goodwin, who is the African American child of a crack addict who has been adopted by Brenda Blethyn and enters the neurotic world of her new older sisters, one of whom is a struggling actress who battles her insecurities by adopting every stray dog in the neighborhood and the other an unappreciated artist with an under appreciating husband. Annie's dry observations and innocent questions serve to juxtapose the self absorbed anxieties of her new older siblings and gives the film a grounded feel.
