Lord of the Rings

The MM - "The Movie Man goes where angels fear to tread with this review and with the stones of King Kong gives an Even Cowgirls Get the Blues thumbs down to Lord of the Rings. Any movie that was born with a platinum spoon in its mouth (multi million dollar budget, megastars from the UK, 14 month filming schedule, ten month pre release publicity campaign) yet barely tips the Movie Man's movie meter at average can not be considered anything less than a disappointment. The men in middle earth embark on one of the most illogical and circuitous routes, traveling from one special effects extravaganza to another. This all too common substitute for acting, along with the rough editing, insult your intelligence like a fairy that shoots dozens of arrows yet seems to have an endless supply of ammo in the quill in every subsequent scene. The result is a three hour parade of computer graphics that millions apparently consider entertainment but I don't see as good movie making."

Note - Two junior staffers liked the movie very much and want it noted that the Movie Man grew up in the colorless world of Leave it to Beaver and has never read the J.R.R. Tolkien classics which so enriched their lives as youngsters and therefore cannot be considered a reliable source on this matter. "The graphics were actually understated in this film," one remarked. "The Movie Man is an old codger, too jaded and bitter to appreciate a good imaginative adaptation of an excellent book."
