The MM - "Robert De Niro plays a hard boiled NYC police officer who finds himself investigating a murder where his drug addicted son (James Franco) is the prime suspect. Frances McDormand plays DeNiro's neighbor and current romantic interest. However, for a movie with two academy award winners, the performance are adequate but not exceptional. City by the Sea also suffers from trying to paint with too broad a stroke. Part family drama, part murder mystery, part statement on society, this movie touches all these bases but fails to cross home plate."
