Cherish

The MM - "Robin Tunney is likeable and believable as the twenty nine year old Zoe who is put under house arrest and forced to wear an electronic ankle bracelet after being framed for vehicular manslaughter. Zoe is unlucky at work, unlucky in love, and about to be really unlucky with the California penal system. Help with her biggest problem comes from a most unlikely source. Tim Blake Nelson plays a straight laced parole officer who, despite his experience with parolees, cannot resist the forces of opposites attract. Cherish is part musical tribute, part romantic comedy, part suspense thriller and the combination works well. It is a well acted and enjoyable film without the usual Hollywood gimmicks."

Ed's Note - We concur with the four hat ranking and enjoyed the film mainly due to its unique pacing and cinematographic style which mostly rescue it from its lapses in logic and a suspense/thriller ending that seems a bit forced. Robin Tunney is almost completely the focus of the film and luckily she's able to with stand the camera's constant scrutiny and pull it off by behaving as an interesting zoo animal might, pacing its cage and testing its limits. The supporting cast is good as well even though they are rarely seen. Indie rock goddess Liz Phair makes a surprise appearance as Zoe's snobby, smart dressing, yuppie boss and Tim Blake Nelson is excellent as her sympathetic keeper.
