My Big Fat Greek Wedding

The MM - "Nia Vardalos stars in this very funny film taken from the one-woman play that she wrote. Nia plays a thirty something hostess at the family restaurant who seems destined to remain single since her father keeps reminding her "you look so old". One day  prince charming enters her life and the fun and romance begin. That's what makes this movie so good. The way it blends comedy and romance without overdoing it or mistreating either. The romance is touching but not sappy. The humor pokes fun at Greek Americans without being offensive. Charming and witty, this romantic comedy is very enjoyable movie viewing."

Movie Man Note - Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson believed that this one-woman play could be successfully converted into a large cast movie. Their belief was so strong they bought the rights and helped produce the film.

Ed's Note - A quirky and oddly paced film. This is perhaps due to its having been adapted from a one woman show (which is extremely hard to picture given the extravaganza that the movie has become). John Corbett, the DJ from Northern Exposure, plays his cool laid back self and the supporting cast of Greek women are fairly amusing. It grows on you as it goes and has a very low key humor that is a pleasant change from anything else playing. We appreciate the film even more after reading about what Nia went through to get it made and how she stuck to her guns when they kept offering her money for the movie but were also insisting that Marisa Tomei or somebody play the lead. She wanted to be in it and now that she is we think she is the best part.
