Letter Re. Suzy Whaley playing in the Greater Hartford Open

Dear Goliard,

While I generally put as little thought into professional golf as possible, and ducked the issue when Annika was in the news, I don't think I like the idea of women playing in the men's tournaments.

Should the girls be able to have their own game when they want, and then play with the boys when they want? Should the leagues be shuffled so the poorer male players can play in the currently women-only leagues? Will women playing in the men's tournaments show sponsors and fans that the men's league is the real league and they'll go back to ignoring the women's leagues. Women's basketball and soccer has just become something that men actually watch, (as opposed to the favorite televised women's sport beach volley ball) and this seems like a step back. Will the 2 best women start playing for the NBA and then we will have to stand by as the women's league collapses.

If women want their leagues to be taken seriously they need to stay with them and work to improve the sport and the competition, not jump at any chance to play with the guys.

The above is guest commentary from one of our editors (female) who lives in Connecticut. It might be worth noting that women's basketball is a different kettle of fish in Connecticut, which also happens to be the locale for the next men's golf event to feature a woman.
