Letter
concerning Internet Radio - 9/27/2002
Dear Goliard,
Please pass on to your readers that independent internet radio is
currently facing a potentially crushing threat. The record
industry has
pushed through exorbitant copyright fees through a program known as
CARP.
Tucson's own local KXCI was silenced from the internet as a result
of this new regime (See http://www.kxci.org/webradio.html).
There is a ray of hope. On Tuesday, October 1, the House will
vote on
Rep. Sensenbrenner's "Relief for Small-Business Webcasters"
bill. The
bill, HR 5469, would allow small webcasters to stay in business
while
their appeal winds its way through the courts by delaying the
imposition
of retroactive CARP fees for an additional six month period.
I, for one, appreciate diversity of content independent of the major
labels. I hope some of your readers will as well.
Information and ways to help can be found on http://www.kurthanson.com/
and http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~willr/cb/sos/.
