Tucson Pizza Updated - June 2006       Link to original review

Since writing the initial column on pizza in Tucson we've eaten quite a few pies and thought we'd update the situation.

The service at Z’s seems to have improved of late although it still remains a bit sporadic. We had several visits in a row where we received prompt friendly service before they returned to old form one night and botched the situation completely. Overall though it seems that the current staff is making more of an effort to make the dining in experience worth the trip and not so infuriating that you’re tempted to storm out and slam the front door (a scene we witnessed compliments of a couple at a nearby table the other night). The pizza remains excellent and the draft beer selection top notch.

Fioritos seems to have lost some of the quality that used to make it’s pies stand head and shoulders above the rest of the thin crusts. Pizzas ordered recently have seemed flat and salty and lacked for toppings. We have not returned to dine inside so this may be a function of the to-go window where, for what it’s worth, we’ve had several good experiences with the drive through personnel and several bad ones. We may venture inside to give them another try before giving up on them completely. In other pizza news, we haven’t returned to Thunder Canyon in some time due to a run in with a cocky bartender that left a bad taste. We also tried a new place called Roccos on Broadway that came highly recommended for Chicago style pizza but we found the pie to be salty and over sauced. The sauce comes spilled across the top instead of under the cheese so this could have something to do with it. It wasn’t bad pizza just not as good as other places in town so we probably won’t be returning.

Fioritos update - Oct 2003

We finally returned to give inside dining at Fioritos a try and found the service and atmosphere to be much improved. The pizza we got inside was excellent and the service, while still a little much for such a small space, was pleasant and efficient. They still lack a good beer selection but possibly have a good wine list and the decor inside is warm and cozy. We've also had a couple of good pies from their take out window so perhaps things are back on track. We've put them back in our regular rotation.

Fioritos update - Nov 2004

We've now had several bad pizzas in a row and have stopped ordering from Fioritos. The last two we got featured about an inch and a half of crust on the sides where no toppings had made it. They seem to have given up on trying to serve unique and tasty pizza.

Fioritos update - June 2006

We heard some time ago that the pizza had returned to form and had been enjoying Fioritos pizza again until just recently. Although it still varies greatly from night to night, it is typically fairly tasty although not even close to what it was back in the day. The trouble is however on busy nights they seem to let the busboys answer the phone and these jackasses have no idea how to take, write, submit, or deliver an order. On a recent evening we sat at the window for ten minutes watching people socialize inside before anyone bothered to help us. When they did get around to taking our money, the pizza order was completely wrong so the vegetarian one of us, who had just returned to town from traveling all day and just wanted some comfort food, had to sit there picking over done sausage and other unwanted toppings off her side of the pie. So we're swearing them off again, even though they're right down the street and the drive up window (when someone more mature than a junior high student who's been sneaking pulls off the wine box is at the helm) sure is convenient.
